As reported in his own blog, Jeff Morgenthaler made this drink on the spot when challenged by a liquor representative to mix a cocktail containing aquavit.
1 fl ounce akvavit

Ingredient: akvavit

Also Known As:  aquavit What it is:  Neutral spirit

Flavoured spirit that is produced in Scandinavia and typically contains 40% alcohol by volume. Its name comes from aqua vitae, the Latin for "water of life".

1 fl ounce applejack

Ingredient: applejack

What it is:  Brandy
Applejack originates from the American colonial period, and is probably derived from the French apple brandy Calvados. Applejack is made by concentrating hard cider, either by the traditional method of freeze distillation or by true evaporative distillation. The term "applejack" derives from "jacking", a term for freeze distillation.

3/4 fl ounce Italian vermouth

Ingredient: Italian vermouth

What it is:  Vermouth

Fortified wine, flavored with aromatic herbs and spices ("aromatized" in the trade) such as cardamom, cinn

Ingredient: Chartreuse (yellow)

What it is:  Liqueur

French liqueur composed of distilled alcohol flavored with 130 herbal extracts.

1 dash Angostura bitters

Ingredient: Angostura bitters

What it is:  Bitters

Stir ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail coupe. Garnish with a large twist of lemon peel and serve.
