2 fl ounce rye whiskey

Ingredient: rye whiskey

What it is:  Whiskey

American rye whiskey, must be distilled from at least 51 percent rye. Canadian rye whisky, may or may not include rye, so long as it possesses the aroma, taste and character generally attributed to Canadian whisky it may legally be labeled "rye". Rye whiskey is less sweet than Bourbon whiskey.

1/2 fl ounce Italian vermouth

Ingredient: Italian vermouth

What it is:  Vermouth

Fortified wine, flavored with aromatic herbs and spices ("aromatized" in the trade) such as cardamom, cinn

1 maraschino cherry

What it is:  Fruit

The name maraschino refers to the marasca cherry and the maraschino liqueur made from it, in which maraschino cherries were originally preserved. They were, at first, produced for and consumed as a delicacy by royalty and the wealthy. While delicious and traditional maraschino cherries are available (e.g., Luxardo brand), most modern versions are preserved in a brine solution, dyed red and packed in sugar syrup.

In a large bar glass, add rye whiskey, vermouth and bitters. Add ice, stir and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.
