Classic Mixology: Cocktail & Mixed Drink Recipes

Sours started life in the mid 1800s more closely resembling Punches, but migrated towards Cocktails until most differentiation was lost by the early 1900s. Simple and easy to make, Sours are mixed drinks containing a base liquor (bourbon or rye in the case of the very popular Whiskey Sour), lemon or lime juice, and a sweetener (simple syrup, grenadine or other fruit syrups).

"The gin sour is made of with the same ingredients as the gin fix, omitting all fruits, except a small piece of lemon, the juice of which must be pressed in the glass."

Jerry Thomas, 1862
